Victoria State Emergency Service (VicSES) is a volunteer-based emergency service that is the control agency for flood, storm, tsunami, earthquake and landslide emergencies. The organisation leads the preparation and response for those hazards and plays a key role within Victoria’s emergency management sector. With multiple specialised services, including teams that provide 24/7 responses, VicSES provides significant contributions and expertise to national and state governing bodies to ensure the safety of all Victorians.
About the role
As the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), you will lead the organisation with a clear focus on planning, prevention, response, and recovery, ensuring our programs and services align with community needs and our strategic vision. You’ll foster relationships that enhance community engagement, positioning VicSES at the forefront of emergency management through the strength of our dedicated volunteer network. Reporting to the Board and collaborating closely with the Chief Officer Operations —the central figure in emergency command—you’ll be accountable for people leadership, cultural development, and continuous operational improvement. With the support of skilled teams, you’ll champion the adoption of top-tier systems to deliver a cost-effective, world-class emergency service organisation.
About you
A credible executive leader with a strong background in public sector, you bring experience from service-focused, regulated environments, ideally you will have operational emergency services or an adjacent sector. Known for your authentic leadership, clear communication, and ability to inspire high performance, you excel in dynamic settings. Your balanced judgement and collaborative approach foster a strong culture centred on volunteers and organisational values. With a senior executive career driven by a commitment to safer communities, you’re a visible, astute leader ready to make a lasting impact.
